COMSOL Multiphysics 2018 Conference

COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS 2018 CONFERENCE

In the second half of the first week of June, we met with COMSOL Multiphysics software users at an already traditional conference in Bořetice, Moravia. The event was attended by 45 users from both the commercial and academic sectors. Less than half of the users arrived already on Wednesday 6th of June evening, which we finished together in a randomly selected wine cellar in the vicinity of Kraví Hora in Bořetice. Discussions about everything stretched into the early morning hours, as is customary at our company events. Around 2am, we were able to talk passionately about quantum physics with our unnamed customer studying bilateral doctoral studies in Belgium and the Czech Republic.

On Thursday morning, we prepared traditional introductory presentations on the news in version 5.3a of the COMSOL Multiphysics and COMSOL Server software. In the morning, there followed a workshop on acoustic calculations in COMSOL Multiphysics, where everyone tried simulation of the acoustic field of the speaker. After lunch, the workshop was followed by our beloved invited guest, Jan Valášek from the Department of Technical Mathematics of the Czech Technical University in Prague. Honza Valášek gave a very organized lecture Principles of the Finite Element Method and examples of its use in the field of acoustics. After the lecture, our application engineer Matouš Lorenc showed in a mini-course how you can use the Kinect motion sensor to scan real geometry and import it into COMSOL Multiphysics. Geometry scanning and import is a frequent tool in biomedical simulations.

Thursday's program concluded with a workshop on Particle Tracing simulations. We introduced the workshop with a short popularization physics experiment, where we used laminar flow to achieve the illusion of reversing time – dropping dyed glycerin into the uncoloured, mixing and returning to the original drop. After the demonstration, the auditorium could try the same role to simulate. In the second part of the workshop, we increased the scale to the nearby universe and simulated the movement of electrically charged particles captured by Van Allen bands around planet Earth. Thursday's program concluded with a visit to the wine cellar „U Jamborů“, which was 30 Km beyond Bořetice in Lednice na Moravě, contrary to everyone's expectations, including ours.

Friday was refreshed by the morning rain, which intersected the otherwise sunny weather. After breakfast, we took the floor and demonstrated how to optimize in COMSOL Multiphysics. In addition to optimization theory, we set up several interesting models. After a short break, the blog of user posts began. We were pleased how many users took the time to come to Bořetice to present interesting tasks from the issues of heat sharing, electromagnetism, acoustics, multiphase flow, elasticity and strength of metal bodies in contact, poroelasticity and radio signal propagation. We thank all users once again very much and we believe that they also benefited from the consultation of models with us and other users.

We finished the whole conference with a Friday lunch. Throughout the year we try to get the word „technical support“ to a higher level and work with our customers on their simulations and the COMSOL Multiphysics Conference is the result of this effort.

See you at COMSOL Multiphysics 2019.
