TECHNICAL COMPUTING CAMP 2015

Informal meeting of fans of technical calculations and computer simulations.

We decided to organize the second year of the Technical Computing Camp in conditions approaching the „Camp“ – in the premises of the Fountain Hotel on the Brno Dam, which was almost entirely reserved for our needs. The weather favored us, the ideal atmosphere for the transition from the summer season to the working and school autumn.

Within the TCC we have prepared 4 thematic areas:
  • Our lectures – news in MATLAB and COMSOL Multiphysics systems.
  • Lectures of invited users.
  • Showcase – practical demonstrations of the use of our tools in the form of a mini-exhibition
  • Competition for the best user project.

On Thursday morning we met in such numbers that we had to add chairs to the hall – the opening lecture was attended by about 80 people. The afternoon was reserved for invited lectures – thank you to all the lecturers for interesting contributions! The evening sitting on the terrace was an opportunity to get better acquainted with colleagues, whom we meet only briefly at other events, sporty individuals could play darts, billiards and petanque. A group of night owls at the end vacuumed up the hotel's stock of Sacher cakes, which proved to be an ideal addition to the Kout 12° beer.

On Friday morning, we converted the hall from a „school“ into an „exhibition area.“ We started with a quiz, which was an opportunity for us to give out small promotional items. At the opening of the Competition and Showcase, everyone had the opportunity to present their project and attract as many visitors as possible to their stand.

Alžběta Vlachynská won the Best Project Competition on the basis of a vote of all present with her thesis from VUT Brno, which presented a nice application for image analysis of the population of photosynthetic cell cultures. The winner had the largest selection at the awards – she reached for the first one from the left. The liquid award was also chosen by the team in second place – Jana Šumpelová and Jan Najman from the Mechatronic Laboratory of VUT Brno presented a functional robotic vehicle Car4, in the design and management of which they used MATLAB, Simulink and Stafeflow tools extensively. Jozef Bošanský from STU Bratislava came in third place with an application for pattern recognition deployed on the Raspberry Pi computer. As a student he could also choose the Student version of the MATLAB program, and he did so 😉

6 participants entered the first year of the competition – thank you for your bravery and we believe that next year there will be more of you.

I thank all participants for their contribution to the success of the event. We at Humusoft are already considering how we will organize a similar TCC event next year. If you – participants of this year's event – have any idea or suggestion about the place, date, program and organization, please get back to me.
